A skerry is a small rocky island usually too small for human habitation. It may be simply a rocky reef. They are often used as resting places by animals such as seals and birds.
Ladoga Skerries is an unique nature reserve located in Karelia, in the northern and western part of Lake Ladoga, consisting of 650 rocky islands of various sizes.
This picture was taken on the island of Honkasalo, which is sometimes called the “Roof of Ladoga”.
The beauty of the Ladoga skerries is fascinating. The great artist and thinker Nicholas Roerich repeatedly visited Karelia from 1913 to 1918. He was interested in studying the ancient magical art, which was associated with the northern territories of Russia. In the North, he was looking for Belovodye (White Water country), a happy country what was preserved in human memory, in which the wisdom and spirituality of humankind were accumulated. He painted many beautiful canvases here in Karelia.
